The same old whiney whine

I cooked dinner for BFB and Mr. BFB last night. It was a not unpleasant evening, but BFB has a new baby totin' sling that results in lots and lots of warm, snuggly baby cuddled against her ample bosom, and it just KILLS ME. The infant is also positioned perfectly for lots and lots of top-of-the-head kissing from mama, and she (the baby) also makes lots and lots of adorable, contented snuffling noises. A few of you have suggested that, in your experience, actual baby is easier to take than pregnant friend. On the whole I'm finding this to be true, but OH THERE ARE MOMENTS.

On the other hand, Operation Don't be a Complete Slacker has been moderately successful. I have managed to do something from my list of tasks every day this week, both at work and at home. (Pantry = super clean!) Yesterday I felt...I hesitate to say it...busy. This is primarily because I had a bunch of student meetings which nicely filled in the chinks of my day, but I'll take whatever I can get. Plus I realized I can do things like clean my office or work on revamping my lab webpages using Mediocre Institutions hideous new templates if I can't bear to work on more intellectually demanding items. And next week is my second Lupron shot, at which point I'll be halfway done with menopause! So...life drags on.

  1. Oh the top of the head kisses. Shot to the heart. You're a good friend.

Glad to hear of your recent productivity.

  2. The little baby cooing noises just rip my heart out. Where is my little baby that coos for me?! You are a good friend, I'm sorry there are those moments, but it sounds like you're doing great.

  3. Bunny-- please keep being a slacker. If you stop being a slacker, I will feel even worse about my own utter slacker-hood. Your claims of doing nothing are sustaining me with hopes that even if I don't do a stitch of science from now until the end of time, I still might get a tenure-track job and an invitation to be keynote speaker...

p.s. sometimes I wish E would watch some porn... why does he ONLY not want to have sex when it counts??? Obviously I need to work on reverse psychology. But this morning went off without a hitch :).

p.p.s. Maybe you should give BFB one of those papoose carriers for a present. One of those ones (can't remember what tribe used them) in which you tie the baby to a board and drag it on the ground behind you... "Trust me", you'll tell them, "This will help her become more Independent."
--you are very brave, and I am sooo glad I don't have a BFB.

  4. It's so true - a baby is so much easier to take than a gooey mother. But in combination? That can be the most awful of the awful (says she who wants so badly to get one of those sling things and to, you know, fill it with gurgling infant). Praise be the universe for little, satisfying, easy-to-accomplish tasks that fill in the chinks of a day. If I didn't have them, I shudder to think.

  5. I totally agree with you. Seeing a baby is not as bad as when someone is pregnant. I can imagine seeing them snuggle together would be hard though. I hope your time is soon. yea for being busy and getting stuff done :)

  6. Watching a mother's eyes dilate with an endorphin surge when you even MENTION her baby is enough to give me the weepy-weeps, so I can only imagine watching the cooing and cuddling is 100x worse. I don't know, it's all kind of hard to see (pregnant bellies included).

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and compassionate comments on my blog. I always treasure yours so much.

  9. Well I think seeing a newborn baby of a person you've also seen pregnant is pretty darn hard to deal with ... But as the others have said you are a really lovely friend to put on your brave face and not let her see your pain.
Glad to hear you are getting some satisfaction from ticking a few things off your list.

  11. You are a great friend to BFB, Mr. BFB, and also B of BF. How hard that evening must have been for you! Good for you, for doing it, for making them dinner, and also for tackling that to-do list!

  12. Wow, you are a saint. You are certainly spending a lot of time with your friends, which not a lot of us could do at this point. Newborns...ah, they make me melt, ache, drool...all of it. And baby slings are a whole 'nuther level of sweetness.
Congrats on plugging away on that list :).
