Get thee to a BunBunery!

The Bunny household is going through some changes as we get hip to the reality of maybe possibly having a baby. It started when I convinced Mr. Bunny to spend some of the money we saved up for IVF on renovating our bathroom. Unlike many of y'all (I'm lookin' at you, Misfit), we have zero skillz in the home repairs department, so are paying some nice people to do the work. While I'm sorry to brag about blowing our wad on toilets and drywall when many of you are hampered in your family-building options by finances, I'm pretty excited about this and can't contain myself. The old bathroom was SKANKY, featuring a closet that perpetually grew mildew and a bunch of fixtures installed by blind monkeys.

We've also started clearing out the BunBunery, though we left some stuff in it until the renovation is over. And since we were ordering something from our favorite furniture place, we threw in a piece of baby furniture. It arrived a few days ago. I didn't expect that to be an emotional event. It's a changing table dealie, so not actually that thrilling--it's not like we're talking about a cradle full of storks or whatever. Plus, when I got home from work, it was sitting draped in plastic amid a bunch of other shit draped in plastic and covered in dust. But when the plastic came off, and we stood there looking at the first object purchased with our actual child in mind, in the room where he or she will actually live...wow. Mr. Bunny pantomimed changing a squalling baby, and I was totally overcome.

This is a recurring experience, I'm finding. It's not like I am EVER not thinking about the fact that I'm pregnant. And now that I get regular reminders that being pregnant is not just some abstraction, but involves an actual fetus inside my body, it's not like it doesn't feel real. I guess it's just that those years of trying made me so focused on the goal of pregnancy, so focused on longing for this crazy-awesome experience I'm currently having, that it can be hard to remember there's something even better ahead. (Insha'Allah.) And when something brings that reality home, it's pretty much mind blowing.

  1. A cradle full of storks! Love the image, but boy, would that be messy. I'm so glad you're getting to enjoy all this, Bunny, and the title of this post rocks. Insha'Allah indeed. xoxo

  2. A changing table was the first thing we bought, too. And I let it sit in the box for a while, taking a wide berth around it as I passed the living room. When we finally put it together, I would walk into the nursery and stare at it. In awe. I had the same feeling when we put the crib together and the room was finally completed. I could NOT believe a real-life-actual baby was going to occupy that space. So, I totally get it.

But isn't it exciting! Baby stuffs! For your baby! BABY! There is, indeed, so much more better ahead. (And the image of a squalling baby on the changing table is extremely accurate, so prepare thyselves for the squirming. It's extra fun when there's a massive amount of poo involved. Word to the wise: if there are socks on, remove them first.)

  4. I know, right?? I confess, hitting 8 weeks this weekend, I peed on a stick that I found while cleaning the bathroom. And it still made me teary and squealy.

    So totally cool, Bunny!!!

  6. Bathroom renovations! I hope we get before and after pics of this. Also, I'm so damn glad you were able to spend the money on THIS instead of IVF.

I'd be emotional about the damn changing table, too. Very cool.

  7. I have packed my crowbar and await the invitation to help out. Just let me tile something. Grout is fun stuff!

My kingdom for a second bathroom, or third in your case. You have are blessed with an abundance of poopers. Well done.

I like that you have something tangible before you in the bunnery. I get little goosebumps thinking of just what wonderful things DO lie just ahead for the Buns.

PS. You flatter me greatly with your last comment. I blush. I know you'd be an excellent friend because you seem to put up with exactly those comments about wearing waders to walk though shit. Score!

PPS. I thought for one moment I would go to grad school for linguistics. I worked with these people in a corporate environment and thanked my lucky stars. Jeebus. If you have folks like that in academics, you'll need waders with kevlar. Toxic!

  8. Ahhhhh.... The skanky b-room good deal you definitely don't want the little bun-bun takin a bath in there! I know exactly how you feel about mind blowing unrealness, now that I'm getting near the end, I feel like I'm free falling, really hope my parachute opens!

  9. A BunBunery sounds delightful. Especially one with a change table and a soon to be baby currently in a Bun Bun stage of development. I'm so glad that these moments are sinking into your heart. You are brimming with gratitude for the gift you've received (and about to receive) and that is beautiful to watch.

  11. Yay, a changing table in YOUR nursery :). Great stuff.
Congrats on the bathroom remodel! I was so happy to get rid of our green fiberglass shower last year when we redid ours :). And the nasty green tile floor that matched. Oh yeah, and the pepto-bismol pink walls that the previous owners thought MATCHED the green. U-G-L-Y

  13. I fear a cradle full of storks would have gotten very messy very fast! Better the changing table. And what a sweet moment that must have been - to see the fiiiirst real item for BunBun arrive there. On occasion I can be found staring into our 2nd bedroom, imagining what it will look like as a nursery. Eeek!

  19. It's fun to have home improvements done - that is, after the mess is over. I remember having some shelves put in. I was so pleased with them, I kept running in and gazing at them in delight.
    Nesting, eh!

  20. I had a good laugh about the "blind monkeys". I think the same blind monkeys put up the plasterboard in our apartment.

And, no wonder you had a moment when you saw the changing table. Even better IS ahead. (Insha'Allah, indeed).
