Yes, I am an eight-year-old.

The first Easter that my little brother was capable of toddling around the yard, I learned that my life had changed forever. I was about 12. My mother always set up an Easter egg hunt in the yard for me and my older brother, and suddenly, instead of being allowed to dash about, scooping up as many eggs as possible, I had to let my little brother find some. I'd be diving for an egg, and my mother would suddenly appear to say, Let HIM have that one. Easter was never the same. Fortunately, when I met my husband, he immediately realized that this injustice from my childhood needed to be redressed. He's arranged an egg hunt for me every year since we met. Unlike the egg hunts of my childhood, this one is indoors, so there's no worry about weather. And my husband goes the plastic egg route, so there's plenty of candy and no eggs rotting in the bookshelf. Every year that BFB and I have lived in the same place, she and her husband have taken part as well. (Turns out it's more fun to hunt against someone else. Just not a two year old.) While Mr. BFB enjoys hunting for eggs, he's a bit more laid back about it, while BFB is an egg hunting TIGER! Over the years, things have gotten more elaborate. Last year's hunt involved assembling an image out of slips of paper found in each egg, using that image to find a map, using the map to find additional clues, using those clues to find the location of our hidden treats (which are always fabulous). My husband is truly a crazed genius when it comes to making this event tons of fun.

(Some of you may be thinking I'm a bit infantile. Yes, I am. Proud of it. I think I do spend a certain amount of time trying to create the safe, happy childhood I didn't get. But what's it to ya?)

I was thinking about the fact that BFB will be gone next year, and how it will be sad to have no one to hunt eggs with. I just wish I could produce some children and raise 'em up to hunt eggs. I think I could relinquish my position as chief egg hunter if I could pass the honor on to my progeny. The idea of my husband never getting to hide eggs for his children...well, it doesn't bear thinking about.

ANYWAY! I'm looking forward to Sunday with something that approaches enthusiasm! It's almost like I'm feeling an emotion other than blah! I hope you all have un-blah weekends! That's enough exclamation points!

  1. my 2 older sisters felt the same way once i was big enuf to join the egg hunt. my middle sis in particular held a big grudge against me until adulthood (we're now super close) bc, in part, of easter. apparently, my mother would follow her around the yard and say "let S have it!" and her standard reply would be "but she's STOOPID and TOO SLOW!". *sniffle*.

that's great of your hubby to recreate for you :o) happy easter!!

  2. That is awesome! I'm impressed with your hubby for coming up with such elaborate tricks :).
I hope you do get to hunt eggs with your kids (although you know they're going to end up even more competitive than you and put you to shame with their mad hunting skills in a couple years :)).

  3. I love Easter Egg hunts! My mom used to plan a huge one for all the kids in the neighborhood when I was small-- something like 35-40 kids searching for eggs in our backyard. Mr. Bunny sounds so sweet.

I hope we get our little egg hunters soon.

  5. As a Bunny, you should love an egg hunt. I also agree you should leave eggs for little ones one day (or Mr. bunny should), and even be able to tell older-Bunny-Jr. not to collect the 'easy' eggs that you left for younger-Bunny-Jr.

    Have fun!!!!

  6. OMG! Your husband totally rocks. You are *NOT* the only adult who does this.

When we were kids, my sister and I were so enamored of Easter we used to hide plastic eggs for each other year-round - so much so that there are no longer any good hiding places around the house we grew up in because we know them all.

When she graduated college, I gave her the ultimate egg hunt. She started with a clue that led her to one of our favorite egg-hiding spots, then each egg had a rockin' gift inside (jewelry, gift card, etc) plus a clue to where the next egg was.

    I so love this!

  9. I would LOVE this. A boyfriend I had in college, who was a flake, but fun, would do this for me all the time. We'd set up treasure hunts all over town for each other on birthdays! Unfortunately, Mr is not so inspired even if he is a genius. I hope you get some good treats and revel in the hunt!

  11. I think egg-hunting is fabulous, and there's nothing infantile about it. And your husband sounds like he puts together a good one (love the idea of the treasure map leading to the really good treats).

Here's hoping that next year he has to hide them in all wide, easily accessible places--where you can maneuver wearing a maternity dress:)

  12. I remember at some point in my childhood, the candy hunt was replaced for a hunt for things like new guitar strings and magazines. And the last ever hidden Easter basket (which based on the contents must have occurred at about 19 years old) held little bottles of booze - khalua for me and rye for my brother. Hope you get some good loot this Sunday!

  13. I, too, am proud to be infantile.
Sure why would you want to be adult-ile?

    Have lotsa fun.

I agree with Adele, lets hope that next year you are hunting for eggs whilst walking around with a back ache from your huge pregnant belly.
